[Lead-in] 1. Well, the southern states of Louisiana and Mississippi ravaged by the storm are key to the U.S. energy infrastructure. New Orleans port handles much of the country¡¯s oil transportation, and its refineries process about 10% of import!ed crude. Malika Kapur looks at the devastation being caused by Katrina in the Gulf of Mexico.
[Story] 2. A storm stronger than most people predicted and the same for its impact on oil prices which hit a record high of 70 dollars and 80 cents on Sunday. Not surprising given Katrina¡¯s location. It¡¯s pounding the Gulf of Mexico. U.S. production in the region accounts for about a quarter of U.S. oil output and 2% for the total worldwide.
[David Buik/ Cantor Index] ¡°Though the price¡¯s gone up nearly 60% since Friday you can see that the speculators, they are obviously, they¡¯re exacerbating the situation. And it¡¯s not surprising this is possibly the worst hurricane we¡¯ve had since 1992 hurricane Andrew. And it is gonna cause some serious damage and we don¡¯t know how long these refineries are gonna be shut for.¡±
3. U.S. rigs in the Gulf normally pump about 1.5 million barrels of oil a day. And the red dots of this map show you just how many rigs are in the storm region. Katrina¡¯s forcing oil companies there to shut down their operation. Royal Dutch Shell says it¡¯s evacuated all staff from its offshore platforms. That alone is taking out around 420,000 barrels of daily oil production in the Gulf.
4. Analysts are talking about a rerun of last year when hurricane Ivan did major damage to Gulf oil facilities and forced many producers to stop pumping oil for months afterwards. This time it¡¯s likely to be worse. Katrina¡¯s threatening to do lasting damage to platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. And this is happening while the industry is already struggling to keep up with the massive surge in demand.
5. Oil prices are up about 60% just since the start of this year, and analysts say we could see them touch 80, even 100 dollars a barrel. Malika Kapur, CNN, London. |
