1. Well, from South American drug barons to Italian mafiosis, Hollywood films have featured a host of stereotypical villains through the years. They have, but one Arab American actor says it's Arabs who have now become the film industry's villain of choice. Sabila Barges has more.

2. Sayed Badreya loves his adopted country (America, I love America), his children (I'm lucky, very lucky), and the duke (I watched John Wayne when I grew up). The Egyptian born actor is a big fan of the USA. But on screen, he couldn't be more anti-American. Because of his Arabic looks, Hollywood most often casts him in the role of a terrorist. That's him in the "Insider" and "True Lies." He's a Muslim hijacker in "Executive Decision."
3. He's played terrorists so often it made an impression on his young daughter.

"The teacher ask my daughter what your father do for living? And you know, he ask all the kids and some one said my father is a doc, my father is an engineer. And he came to Jolly, and she said my father hijack aeroplane, because all the movie I'm in, I'm having a gun and I'm hijacking an aeroplane."
4. During the cold war, Hollywood cast Russians as villains as in Rocky IV. It was Nazis during world war II. Think of Casablanca. With terrorism constantly on the news, Hollywood villains of the moment are Arabs.
5. But well before terrorism became a national concern, Hollywood depicted Arabs negatively. Consider "Raiders of the Lost Ark," or "The Sheik" from the silent era.

"The Arab Muslim stereotype is as solid as a prehistoric rock. It has not bent, it has been there decades before 9.11, and it persists today."
6. Badreya prepares for his latest audition. The role? An Arab who plots to kill the president.
"And here again, you're playing a terrorist."
"My conscious saying hey, big guy, you know, you're doing the wrong thing."
Badreya says he doesn't mind playing terrorists. But he'd like to improve the image of Arabs by playing some good guys, too.
7. He's developing a feature film called American East which he says will offer a more balanced view of Arab Americans. It will star Badreya's friend Tony Shaloub who is of Lebanese descent.

"All of this constant, negative, you know, images, negative portrayals are not helping. You know, we are trying to offset them."
Shalhoub and Badreya have started a program to fund movies by Arab American film makers.
8. Badreya recently starred in a student film by an Iraqi American director playing the kind of three dimensional Arab character rarely seen in Hollywood films.
"So here, I don't have to say I'll kill you from the name of God. I got the, you know, real emotion, I cry, a big Arabic man, you know. This is good."
9. He worked on that film for free. But to feed his family and to bankroll movies that would improve the image of Arab Americans, Badreya needs a paying job. That may mean playing another Arab terrorist in a Hollywood movie, something he knows would harm the image of people like him.

2. 사예드 바드레야는 자신이 선택한 미국과 아이들, 그리고 어려서부터 보고 자라온 죤 웨인을 무척 좋아합니다. 이집트에서 태어난 그는 미국을 열광적으로 좋아하지만 스크린 위에서는 최고의 반미주의잡니다. 아랍인이라는 외모때문에 테러리스트 역을 자주 맡기 때문입니다. 그는 영화 <인사이더>와 <트루 라이즈>에 등장했습니다. <파이널 디씨젼>에서는 비행기 납치범으로 나왔습니다.
3. 테러리스트 역할만 해온 나머지 한 번은 이런 일도 있었다고 합니다.

"어느 날 딸 아이가 다니는 학교 선생님이 아버지 직업을 물었는데 다들 의사, 엔지니어라고 답하는데 우리 딸은 아버지가 비행기를 납치한다고 대답했다고 하더군요. 등장한 모든 영화에서 총을 들고 비행기를 납치하니 그렇게 생각했던거죠."
4. 영화 <로키 4>에서처럼 냉전시대에 헐리우드 악당은 러시아인이었습니다. 2차 대전때는 나찌였습니다. <카사블랑카>를 생각해보십시오. 그리고 연일 티비에 테러뉴스가 나오는 요즘엔 아랍인입니다.
5. 테러리즘이 국가적 우려로 떠오르기 훨씬 전부터 헐리우드는 아랍인들을 부정적으로 묘사해왔습니다. 영화 <레이더스>와 심지어 무성영화 시절부터 그랬습니다.

"아랍 무슬림에 대한 고정 관념은 선사시대 돌멩이처럼 단단하게 굳어져있습니다. 9.11발생 수십 년 전부터 존재해왔고 지금도 마찬가집니다."
6. 바드레야의 차기 배역은 미 대통령을 암살할 계획을 꾸미는 아랍인입니다. "이번에도 테러리스트시군요?" "내 양심은 틀린 일이라고 말합니다." 바드레야는 테러리스트 역은 개의치않지만 아랍인의 이미지 개선을 위해 좋은 역을 맡고 싶다고 말합니다.
7. 그는 아랍계 미국인에 대한 좀더 균형잡힌 시각을 제공할 영화 <아메리칸이스트>를 제작중입니다. 그의 친구이자 레바논 출신의 토니 샬룹이 출연할 예정입니다.

"아랍인에 대한 지속적인 부정적인 이미지와 묘사는 잘못됐고 그걸 바로잡기 위해 노력중입니다."
샬룹과 바드레야는 아랍계 미국인 영화 제작을 후원하기 위해 이 일을 시작했습니다.
8. 바드레야는 이라크계 미국인 학생감독의 영화에서 헐리우드에서는 보기힘든 다면적인 아랍인 배역을 소화해냈습니다. "여기서는 '신의 이름으로 처단하겠어'같은 대사가 아니라 덩치 큰 아랍 남자가 눈물을 흘리는 진정한 내면 연기를 할 수 있어 좋습니다."
9. 그 영화에는 돈을 받지 않고 출연하지만 가족을 부양하고 아랍인의 이미지 제고를 위한 영화 자금을 마련하기 위해서는 돈이 되는 일을 해야 합니다. 동포의 이미지에 흠집을 내는 헐리우드 악당 역을 연기해야하는 것입니다.
