1. Now some serious health news here. It seems that in every country all over the world there are women forced by circumstances to work in the sex industry. And for them the threat of disease is a huge problem. But one of the world’s wealthiest men is trying to address that very problem. CNN’s senior medical correspondent Dr Sanjay Gupta explains.

2. Sakhubai's story can be hard to hear. She says she was sold into sex work by her family at age 15. And she's spent the last 20 years as a prostitute in Mumbai, India. Health-wise, she has been relatively fortunate. She is still HIV negative, but she also lives in a world where she has to convince her partners to use a condom.
3. Life may soon change for Sakhubai and many other women around the world. Sakubhai has just found couple of strong new advocates. In fact, they're two of the richest people in the world - Bill and Melinda Gates who are using the huge platform of the International AIDS Conference in Toronto to talk about and fund what they believe is the most recent and biggest development in the fight against AIDS, microbicides.

"We believe that microbicides and oral prevention drugs could be the next big breakthrough in the fight against AIDS."
4. Now, microbicides is a fancy name for gels or creams a woman can insert to block HIV infection. Large studies of their effectiveness are expected out next year. And already, newer, exciting products are being developed. One clever idea, make these gels out of medicines now used to treat HIV. One of the most intriguing is a drug called Tenofovir.
5. And elsewhere other researchers are testing the same medicine, Tenofovir and some other drugs in a pill form to see if women who aren't infected can stay that way by taking a pill before sex. Although the research on all these approaches is still in it's early stages, it's steps closer to giving control back to women, like Sukabai, keeping them from getting infected with HIV.

3. 사쿠비를 비롯한 전세계 많은 매춘 여성의 삶이 곧 변할 지 모릅니다. 최근 이들을 위해 힘 있는 사람들이 나섰기 때문입니다. 세계 최대 갑부 빌과 멜린다 게이츠 부부가 캐나다 토론토에서 개최된 국제 에이즈 회의에서 에이즈 퇴치 운동에 가장 큰 돌파구가 될 지 모르는 '마이크로비사이드'에 대해 언급하며 자금 지원을 약속했습니다.

4. 마이크로비사이드는 HIV 감염을 막기 위한 젤과 크림의 가칭입니다. 약의 효능에 관한 추가 연구 결과는 내년에 발표될 전망입니다. 이미 응용 제품이 개발되고 있습니다. 마이크로비사이드 젤에서 HIV 치료제를 만드는 것입니다. 가장 전망이 밝은 것이 테노포비르가 있습니다.
5. 연구자들은 테노포비르 등 유사한 약품을 알약 형식으로 만들어 성관계 전에 에이즈 예방약으로 사용할 수 있는 지 여부도 테스트 중입니다. 아직 연구는 초기 단계지만 사쿠비 씨같은 여성이 에이즈 감염으로부터 스스로를 지킬 힘이 되줄 전망입니다. |
