1. International conflict, a street crime is a whole set of issues you’d probably never associate with the World Cup. But not so, for some young fans of the Game. For them the Game is a just convenient way to overcome some of bigger challenges in life as Patrick Snell reports from the streets of Berlin.

2. Politics and sports it’s often argued they should never fix. But like music such as the Live Aid and Live Eight events sports is now too becoming a tool for social change. And what could be more far reaching for the world’s most popular sports, footfall.

“Football for hope, football for better understanding. That is just what we are experiencing these days and especially here today. We are bringing teams together that on a political level would never play each other. But here at the Street Football Festival we have achieved just that, and it’s absolutely great.”
3. What FIFA President Sepp Blatter declared inaugural Street Football World Cup officially opened in this quirky, grungy area of Berlin. It was well aware of both the play on the pitch and the pitch to the world.

“It’s just like, like a World Cup, 24 teams from 5 continents. It’s of course, it’s important for us. Since we have a social project in our country, we just make football a tool to fight against poverty, against war victim. We do not come here to win. We just want to make friends.”
4. Teams such as the “Peace” team, a joint Israeli-Palestinian effort, and “Footfall Friends” a similar joint venture from the Balkans join clubs from such politicized countries as Rwanda and Afghanistan. All in an effort to win the Andres Escobar Cup named after the Colombian international, who scored an own goal and lost to the host U.S.A at World Cup ’94 and was later killed in a bomb. But politics aside, the sports itself is a fan-friendly, fast-pace football frenzy, each match lasting just 12 minutes with hip-hop music and live commentary. Small teams, small goals and high hopes keep players and fans on their toes. The spectators are very close to the action, sometimes a little too close.
5. And in a very unique twist and in line with FIFA’s fair play campaign there are no referees. Players simply raise their hand if they’ve been fouled and the ball is theirs. What’s more the two teams meet free match to determine the rules they play under, for example the number of players on the pitch or whether or not goals from a girl will count double.

“We talked with Turkish and in our team there’s a guy who speaks Turkish. So it was not so difficult. And uhm…but we want to try that my goal, um…ah…2 goals, but the Turkey are against that because they have no girl in the team.”
The joy on their faces tell the story of success.
6. [Wesley Rhulani Ngobeni / South African Dir., Team “KickAIDS”]
“Most of them never thought of these because they are from homeless, someone who doesn’t have parents. So we are their, acting as their parents and so forth. So when they get this opportunity for them it’s a dream come true. And I’m very excited to be here. So they are busy exchanging whatever with other kids from other countries. So they feel like they are above the air.”

"희망을 추구하고, 서로에 대한 이해를 드높이기 위한 축구입니다. 우리가 현재 월드컵으로 경험하고 있는 점이기도 합니다. 정치적으로 서로 반목하는 국가들이 여기에 함께 모였습니다. 오늘 길거리 월드컵에서는 모두가 화합을 이루었습니다. 정말 감격적입니다."
3. 제프 블래터 피파(FIFA) 회장이 베를린의 허름한 경기장에서 제 1회 길거리 월드컵의 공식 개막을 선언했습니다. 블래터 회장은 선수들이 세상에 보내는 메시지도 잘 알고 있습니다.

"진짜 월드컵처럼, 5개 대륙에서 24개 팀이 길거리 월드컵에 참여하고 있어요. 이번 대회에 참가함으로써, 아프가니스탄의 빈곤을 퇴치하고 전쟁 피해자들을 위로하는 데에 도움이 됐으면 좋겠습니다. 우승보다는, 많은 친구를 사귀고 싶어요."
4. "피스"라는 이름의 팀은 이스라엘과 팔레스타인 선수들로 구성됐습니다. "풋볼 프렌즈"도 분쟁 지역, 발칸 반도의 다국적 선수들로 이루어진 단일팀입니다. 선수들의 목표는 '안드레스 에스코바르컵'을 획득하는 것입니다. '안드레스 에스코바르'는 94년 미국 월드컵에서 자책골을 넣은 후, 술집에서 살해된 콜롬비아 출신 선수였습니다. 정치에 상관없이, 경기는 팬들의 열렬한 성원에 힘입어 흥미진진하게 진행됩니다. 경기 시간은 고작 12분이고, 힙합 음악과 즉석 해설이 경기장에 울려 퍼집니다. 팀의 규모와 공의 크기는 작지만, 희망만은 높아 선수들과 팬들의 열기가 뜨겁습니다. 관중들도 경기장에 거의 붙어 있다시피 합니다.
5. 그리고 공정한 경기를 펼치자는 FIFA 캠페인에 따라, 길거리 월드컵에는 심판이 없습니다. 파울을 당해도, 손을 든 뒤에 공을 가져가기만 하면 됩니다. 또한 양 팀들은 경기 전에 미리 만나, 선수 몇 명이 경기에 뛸 지, 여자 선수의 골을 두 골로 인정할 지에 대한 구체적인 규칙을 정합니다.

"저희 팀은 터키 팀이랑 미리 만났는데요, 저희 팀에 터키어를 하는 선수가 있어서 별 문제가 없었어요. 여자라서, 제가 넣은 골은 2점으로 하고 싶었지만, 터키 팀은 여자 선수가 없어서 안 된다고 하더라고요."
골을 넣은 선수들의 얼굴에 기쁨이 넘쳐 납니다.
6. [웨슬리 엔고베니 / 남아공 축구팀 감독]
"대부분 선수들이 부모님이 안 계시거나, 집안 사정이 어렵기 때문에, 이렇게 즐거운 시간을 갖게 될지 몰랐을 겁니다. 선수들에겐 마치 꿈이 이뤄진 것 같은, 귀중한 기회이지요. 이번 경기에 오게 되서 너무 기쁘다고 합니다. 다른 국가 선수들과도 열심히 우정을 쌓고 있어요. 아이들의 자신감이 한층 높아졌습니다."
