[Lead-in] 1. For all week we've had, our "Eye on Brazil". Today, we hear the story of a teenage ballerina from one of Rio de Janeiro's shanty towns. The violence and poverty around her did not stop her from dreaming big. Jim Clancy has more on her pirouette to the top.
[Report] 2. In a tiny bedroom in one of the thousands of makeshift homes in Rio's ever growing shanty towns, 17-year-old Jordana Moreira is making big plans. "When she was 11", says her mother, "I saw she was a ballerina, like a swan in swan lake." Jordana's lifelong home has been Favela Da Mare - the battleground of Rio de Janeiro's drug wars. She's had to pirouette past gunfire and even grenades to get to her ballet classes at Vila Olimpica da Mare Stadium.
"I'm used to the violence", says Jordana, "It's not a problem, it's no big deal."
3. The "big deal" as the teen would say, is that she's on her way to nothing less than a Bolshoi Ballet. The world famous Russian Ballet held auditions here. As her teacher tells the story, Jordana danced past thousands of competitors, startling the judges with her strength and grace, and inspiring all those around her with her sheer determination.
4. Few of her peers in Favela da Mare will be as fortunate. Jordana lives on a street nicknamed "the Gaza Strip" because residents claim more people died in the crossfire here than in the conflict in the Middle East. This Olympic stadium has been not just a safe haven for young people, but a portal to another world beyond the poverty and violence.
"The belief and love from everyone in the the Olympic complex made the difference", says Jordana.
And what of her own will to succeed? Her strength, she says, came from a burning desire to show that even if we live in this poor community, we can be as good as anyone.
