[Lead-in] 1. In the northern China now, something almost unthinkable in the 21st century. Authorities have freed hundreds of captive workers, essentially slaves from deplorable conditions. Video of the men and boys kidnapped and then beaten in whips by their jailers has shocked the public and people around the world. John Vause has the story.
[Report] 2. Set free from what they described as a living hell, men and children, forced into slave labor according to authorities, at privately owned brick works in the country's north. Many parents have been searching for their children since February and never thought they'd see them again. "I just didn't think my son will be alive." says this woman.
3. Some of the children, as young as eight, were kidnapped from train and bus stations. The others along with the adults, lured here by the false promise of good wages. This boy says he was told he would earn almost 200 U.S. dollars a month but there was no money, just 14 hours or more of back-breaking work each day, beatings, and at times some claim to have been whipped. The workers were kept under constant watch by guards with dogs. Authorities believe some of those who tried to escape were killed. "They all had cell phones, and the moment we tried to escape they'd call each other, and they'd all come and get us." says this man.
4. The survivors were emaciated, ragged, suffering physical and emotional scars. Some knew only their names, and at times, were barely able to speak. More than a hundred suspects have now been detained amid claims on state media that as many as a thousand children may have been sold into slavery. Last week, during another series of raids, dozens were set free. They had been imprisoned for more than a year. Police only moved in after local television exposed the brutality at the brick works.
5. Local officials have since apologized for failing to act sooner but in a country which once claimed to be "the Workers' Paradise", there is widespread anger that almost nothing was done for so long to stop such appalling treatment, especially of young children. John Vause, CNN, Beijing |
