90년대 팝계의 마무리는 '3S'였다. Santana, 슈퍼히트앨범 [Supernatural], 그리고 . 사람들을 미치게 만들었던 섹시함 그 자체 의 진득한 기타소리에 노랫말을 읊어대던 청년의 목소리 역시 우리나라 사람들에게 어필했는데, 그 목소리의 주인공은 이미 96년부터 미국에서는 [Supernatural] 못지 않은 인기를 모으고 있던 Matchbox 20의 롭 토마스였다.
중절모에 선글래스를 쓰고 기타를 치는 카를로스 산타나 옆에서 상대적으로 새파란 젊은이로 보이던 그는 의 공동 작곡자이기도 했다. 세기를 넘기고서야 사람들은 Matchbox 20에 주목하기 시작했다.
Matchbox 20의 음악은 비슷한 시기에 우리나라에서 엄청난 인기를 모았던 - 죄다 얼터너티브로 묶여 표현됐던 - 여타 밴드들과는 다르게 그다지 대중적 인기를 모으지 못했지만 미국에서는 96년 발매한 데뷔앨범이 기어이 2000년에 다이아몬드 앨범(1000만장 이상 판매)을 기록할 만큼 가히 폭발적으로 '떴었다'. (왠쥐 Hootie & The Blowfish가 떠오르지 않는가. 미 남부의 서정성과 컨트리, 얼터너티브가 혼합된 루츠록은 이상하리만치 국내에서는 생각보다 인기가 적다^^;)
지역적인 인기를 떠나 Matchbox 20의 음악은 REM의 마이클 스타이프보다 더욱 깊은 호소력과 설득력을 갖춘 '죽이는 보컬' 롭 토마스를 필두로 - 산타나의 선택은 현명했다! - 탄탄한 연주력과 유려한 멜로디를 때에 따라 강약으로 조절해 내는 힘이 어우러진 보기 드문 선물이다.
2005년까지 10여년동안 단 3장의 앨범을 발표하며 활동하고 있지만 각 앨범의 전곡이 저마다 확실한 색깔을 드러내게 만드는 Matchbox 20의 역량은 놀랍다. 는 이들의 데뷔 앨범 [Yourself Or Someone Like You]에 수록된 곡으로 Matchbox 20를 알리는데 일조한 곡이다. 한번 매력을 느끼면 헤어나지 못할 정도로 Matchbox 20의 세계로 밀어버리는 .
데뷔앨범의 '다이아몬드표 탄력'과 의 흥행에 순항을 거듭하며 2000년 발표한 2집 [Mad Season]의 빌보드 1위곡 역시 사랑스럽겠지만 이들의 가장 처음 모습-이라기엔 성숙했던-이 살아숨쉬는 가 그래도 가장 Matchbox 20 답지 않을까. 물론 이렇게 말한다면 가 구석에서 울고 있을지도 모르지만. 가 제대로 들렸을때의 그 전율이란. 가슴 꾹꾹 누르면서 외치는 듯한 롭의 절규.
