본곡 Haggard - Eppur si Muove는?
갈릴레오의 "그래도 지구는 돈다"라는 종교재판을 비판한 노래로 전해진다. 대충 다들 알겠지만서도 당시 재판에 대해 이야기하자면
그는 "지구가 움직이고 태양이 고정되어 있다"는 '썰'을 풀었다는 죄목으로 1633년 종교재판에서 유죄판결을 받았습니다. 그가 받은 형벌은 코페르니쿠스식 견해를 포기하고 감옥에 들어가 3년간 일주일에 한번씩 7번의 고해성시를 반복해서 암송하는 것이었습니다.
종교재판소에서 갈릴레오 갈릴레이는 이렇게 말했죠..
"하지만 나는 이 종교재판소로부터, 태양이 중심이며 움직이지 않는다고 주장하는 잘못된 견해를 전부 철회하라는 명령을 받았으며, 또한 어떠한 방식으로든 그 거짓된 교리를 주장하거나, 지지하거나, 가르치는 것을 금지당했기 때문에.... 나는 지금까지의 실수와 이단적인 발언, 아울러 이 성스러운 교회의 교리에 위반되는 일반적인 다른 모든 주장들까지 전부 철회하는 바이며, 그것들을 저주하고, 혐오스럽게 생각합니다."
기록에 의하면 이 공판에서 그가 중얼거렸다는 "그래도 지구는 돈다"는 말은 사실이 아니라고 합니다. 그는 공판에서 네 번이나 "그래도 코페르니쿠스식의 견해를 믿느냐"는 질문에 매번 부인을 했습니다. 너무 나이가 들어 고문의 두려움을 느꼈기 때문이었다고 합니다. 이로 인해 갈릴레오는 실제로 감옥에서 들어가 단 하루도 살지 않았습니다.
"그래도 지구는 돈다" 라고 한말은 어쩌면 갈릴레이의 마음속에서 울려퍼졌던 말인지도 모르죠..
당시 루터역시 "This fool [Copernicus] wishes to reverse the entire science of astronomy; but sacred $cripture tells us that Joshua commanded the sun to stand still, and not the,arth."
"이 바보(코페르니쿠스)는 천문학 전체를 뒤집어 놓으려한다. 그러나 성스러운 복음서는 여호수아가 태양에게 정지할 것을 명령하셨지 지구에게 정지하라고 명령한 것이 아님을 우리에게 말해 주고 있다."
라며 지동설을 부인하며 그을 이단시화하였읍니다.*
