OK, Steven, I actually don't even know American history that well, but could you

talk a little bit about Canadian history.

Sure, I'm not an expert but I know enough about Canadian history to say a little bit.

Jacques Cartier discovered Canada. He was a French explorer back in the 17th century.

Originally, Canada was called New France. It was a colony of France and actually,

the French were the first to colonize North America, so there's in the southern

United States, like Louisiana, there's still quite a large French influence. Anyhow, for

I don't know, a hundred or so years, 150 years, the French ruled, and the British then

came over and they wanted to sort of take over, so there was a big war and the British won

and that's why we're speaking English now. If the French had won the big war, then we'd

all be studying French. It's kind of funny. One war decided a lot of history for North America.

In Quebec they still speak French, actually Montreal is the second largest French speaking

city in the world, only behind Paris. There's seven million people in Quebec who speak

French as their first language. Many Canadians speak French because it's taught in schools,

and Canada has two official languages, French and English. The French and the English don't

really get along but there's not much we can do about it, try to live happily. They actually

tried to separate a couple of times and they voted on separating, there was a referendum,

but the last time there was a referendum, they lost by point-two percent (0.02%)

Wow, that's close!

It was 51, 50.8 voted to stay. 49.2 voted to leave. So it was that close. 1 % separating.

so Quebec is staying in Canada as far as I can tell.
