Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer were a notorious couple of cats 
As knockabout clowns, quick change comedians 
Tight-rope walkers and acrobats 
They had an extensive reputation 
They made their home in Victoria Grove 
That was merely their center of operation 
For they were incurably given to rove 

If the area window was found ajar 
And the basement looked like a field of war 
If a tile or two came loose on the roof 
Which presently ceased to be waterproof 
If the drawers were pulled out from bedroom chests 
And you couldn't find one of your winter vests 
Or after supper one of the girls 
Suddenly missed her Woolworth pearls 

Then the family would say, "It's that horrible cat! 
It was Mungojerrie or Rumpleteazer!" 
And most of the time they left it at that 

Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer had an unusual gift of the gab 
They were highly efficient cat burglars 
As well and remarkably smart at a smash and grab 
They made their home in Victoria Grove 
They had no regular occupation 
They were plausible fellows who liked to engage 
A friendly policeman in conversation 

When the family assembled for Sunday dinner 
Their minds made up that they wouldn't get thinner on 
Argentine joint, potatoes and greens 
Then the cook would appear from behind the scenes 
And say in a voice that was broken with sorrow 
"I'm afraid you must wait and have dinner tomorrow 
The joint has gone from the oven like that!" 

Then the family would say, "It's that horrible cat! 
It was Mungojerrie or Rumpleteazer!" 
And most of the time they left it at that 

Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer had a wonderful way of working together 
And some of the time you would say it was luck 
And some of the time you would say it was weather 
They'd go through the house like a hurricane 
And no sober person could take his oath 
Was it Mungojerrie or Rumpleteazer? 
Or could you have sworn that it mightn't be both? 

And when you heard a dining room smash 
Or up from the pantry there came a loud crash 
Or down from the library came a loud ping 
From a vase which was commonly said to be Ming 
Then the family would say: "Now which was which cat? 

It was Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer 
And there's nothing at all to be done about that!

멍고제리와 럼플티저는 악명 높은 한쌍의 고양이
  법석대는 광대에서 희극배우로 돌변한다네
  줄타기도 하고 곡예도 하지
  그들은 명성이 자자해졌다네
  빅토리아 그로브에 집도 있지
  하지만 거기는 그저 운영본부 같은 곳
  그들은 불치의 유랑벽이 있으니까

  어느 곳의 창문이 조금 열려 있는 걸 봤다면
  그리고 지하실이 마치 전쟁터를 방불케 한다면
  지붕위 기와 한 두 개가 떨어져 있다면
  그래서 이윽고 비가 샌다면
  침실 서랍장의 서랍이 열려져 있다면
  그리고 네 겨울옷 중 하나를 찾을 수 없다면
  혹은 저녁 먹은 후에 한 여자가
  갑자기 진주목걸이를 잃어버렸다면

  가족들은 말하지 "이 망할 놈의 고양이!
  그건 멍고제리 아니면 럼플티저야"
  그리고 그들은 거의 언제나 그 정도로 그만이지

  멍고제리와 럼플티저는 말주변이 보통이 아니지
  그들은 유능한 고수 고양이 도둑
  게다가 부수고 낚아채는 데는 대단히 재빠르지
  그들은 빅토리아 그로브에 집도 한 채 있지
  그들은 정해진 직업이 없다네
  말주변 좋은 친구들
  경찰관과도 다정하게 대화하기를 즐긴다네

  일요일 저녁 식사시간 온 가족이 모여 앉아
  날씬해지는 것을 포기하기로 작정하고
  아르헨티나산 고기, 감자와 야채를 기다릴 때
  어디선가 나타난 요리사가
  슬픔에 잠긴 목소리로 말하지
  '내일 저녁까지 기다리셔야겠습니다'
  '오븐에 있던 고기가 없어져 버렸어요'

  그러면 가족들은 말하지 '망할 놈의 고양이!'
  멍고제리 아니면 럼플티저야!
  그리곤 거의 언제나 그 정도로 그만이지

  멍고제리와 럼플티저는 환상의 동업조
  어떤 때는 운이었다 말하겠지
  어떤 때는 날씨 탓이라 말하겠지
  그들은 허리케인처럼 온 집안을 휘젓고 다녔다네
  그래도 단언할 수 있는 분별력 있는 사람은 아무도 없다네
  멍고제리 였을까? 아니면 럼플티저 였을까?
  아니면 둘이 같이 한 걸 거라고 맹세할 수 있겠어?

  식당에서 우당탕 하는 소리가 나거나
  식료품 저장실에서 뭔가 깨지는 큰 소리가 나거나
  서재에서 뭔가 떨어지는 소리가 날 때
  그게 바로 명나라 도자기 깨지는 소리였을 때
  가족들은 이렇게 말하겠지 '어느 고양이야 누가 그런 거야?'

  바로 멍고제리하고 럼플티저예요
  아무도 그들을 말릴 수 없다네
