[Lead-in] 1. Well, we¡¯d like to turn now to what we call CNN Heroes, our latest. She is a Starbucks barista in the U.S. state of Washington, who gave more than just one cup of coffee to one of her customers. Sandra Andersen saw a stranger across the counter in need of a miracle, and she was able to deliver, believe or not. And today we¡¯re doing a story about her. Take a look.
[Story] 2. In 1990, I was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease, this genetic. And there¡¯s no cure for this disease. And I have this lovely little granddaughter, and I want to be so involved in her life. I miss her now, and I just started praying, ¡®For God, please send me an angel.
3. I work at Starbucks in Tacoma, Washington. I¡¯m the morning person. I work from 5 in the morning until 1 o¡¯clock. Annamarie¡¯s one of my customers. She comes in everyday. And this particular morning I could tell that she just was feeling real well, so I asked what was wrong.
4. I told her that I had been placed on the national kidney transplant list.
¡°I just looked and I said, ¡®you know I wanna test for you.¡¯¡±
5. My name is Sandra Andersen and I am a barista for Starbucks. And I¡¯m donating a kidney to a customer. I went and had my blood tested. I sat down with my family and we got as much information as we possibly could. Then the day came when I was able to tell her. Here¡¯s this long line to the door and I just reached over and grabbed her hand and said ¡®I¡¯m a match.¡¯ And we both just stood there and balled.
6. It was a joyful moment for me. I¡¯ve been praying for an angel. I never in a million years, would have thought it would¡¯ve been my barista. Never.
¡°I knew in my heart this was the time for me to step up. And I found out that I could. So it was pretty awesome.¡±
7. On March 11, 2008, Sandra Andersen donated one of her kidneys to her customer, Annamarie Ausnes. The surgery was a success.
