1. After months of clashes and up to a thousand deaths, Kenya's leaders took a step towards peace on Thursday. Following tense negotiations, President Mwai Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga finally signed a power sharing agreement. CNN's David McKenzie reports from Nairobi.

2. A momentous occasion...just 48 hours after negotiations were suspended, the breakthrough Kenyans and the world had been waiting for. President Mwai Kibaki and opposition leader, Raila Odinga signing a power sharing agreement in hopes of ending a political crisis that had erupted into bloody civil strife.
3. The men, who had become bitter enemies since the opposition accused President Kibaki of stealing the general election, will now have to work together in a coalition government. with Raila Odinga as prime minister. The disputed elections and the protracted negotiations represented the darkest hour in Kenya since independence, over a thousand people were killed and hundreds of thousands were displaced.
4. But after intense international pressure, the calls for reconciliation have begun.

"Let the spirit of healing begin today. Let it begin now. Compromise was necessary for the survival of this country. Support this agreement for it is the key to unity in Kenya."
5. The agreement, a triumph for Kofi Annan, the former UN secretary general who had promised Kenyans that he wouldn't leave until this moment. The political deal, immediately cheered on the street. But just as supporters of Odinga celebrated the agreement, police forces moved in to tear gas them, a painful reminder, that though this is a good day for the country, it is just the first step in the long road to healing a nation.

2. 역사적 순간입니다. 협상 중단 48시간 만에 케냐와 국제사회가 기다리던 합의 소식이 들려왔습니다. 키바키 대통령과 야당 지도자인 오딩가가 연립정부를 구성키로 했습니다. 대선 후 유혈사태에 빠진 케냐 정국을 수습하기 위해섭니다.
3. 부정 선거로 승리를 도둑맞았다고 주장하는 야당의 이의 제기로, 그간 키바키 대통령과 오딩가는 정치적 숙적이었지만 이젠 함께 연정을 꾸려가야 합니다. 오딩가는 새 정부의 총리를 맡게 됩니다. 대선 이후의 혼란은 독립 후, 케냐가 맞은 최대의 정치적 위기였습니다. 천여 명 이상이 숨졌고 수십만 명의 이재민이 발생했습니다.
4. 국제적 압력이 가중되면서 정파 간 대화가 시작됐습니다.

5. 이번 협상은 코피 아난 전 유엔 사무총장의 승리이기도 합니다. 협상이 타결될 때까지 케냐를 떠나지 않겠다고 약속하기도 했습니다. 케냐인들은 협상 타결을 크게 반겼습니다. 하지만 합의를 자축하는 오딩가 지지자들에게 경찰은 최루탄 세례를 퍼부었습니다. 정파 간 분쟁이 낳은 상처가 아무는 데는 적잖은 시간이 걸릴 것으로 보입니다. |
