1. "외계인도 창조물"이라는 교황청 발표 이전에도 세계는 외계인의 존재를 확신했습니다. 영국에서만 지난 10년간 수백 건의 UFO 목격 신고가 접수됐습니다. 그리고 영국 국방부가 마침내 외계인 파일을 공개했습니다.

2. 할리우드 영화에 등장하는 미확인비행물체, UFO는 일반적으로 접시 모양입니다. 영화 <미지와의 조우>와 <인디펜던스데이>, <화성침공>도 마찬가집니다.
3. 한편, 지구인의 카메라에 잡힌 UFO의 실제 모습은 이렇습니다. 흔들리고 흐릿하고 밝은 빛을 내는 접시 모양입니다. 사기일까요, 착각일까요? 아니면 외계인이 실제로 존재하는 걸까요? 영국 국방부가 외계인 관련 자료를 전격 공개하기로 했습니다. UFO 목격 신고를 받고 조사한 내용을 담은 문서를 공개하기 시작했습니다. 가장 먼저 1981년에서 1987년 사이의 문서가 공개됐습니다.

4. UFO 전문가, 데이빗 클라크의 끈질긴 노력으로 문서 공개가 가능했습니다. 그는 대부분, 설명이 가능하지만 아닌 경우도 있다고 말합니다. 지난 1984년 한 공항의 지상통제탑에서 목격한 경우가 바로 그렇습니다.
"밝은 빛을 내는 동그란 물체가 활주로에 잠시 내려앉았다가 놀라운 속도로 날아갔다고 합니다. 하지만, 국제공항의 명성에 흠집을 낼 것을 두려워해 언론에 공개할 때 공항 이름을 빼달라고 요청했다고 합니다."
5. 국방부는 대중의 요구가 커서 공개를 결정했다고 발표했고, 조직적인 은폐는 없는 것으로 드러났습니다. 유사한 점도 있지만, 공개된 외계인 관련 문건은 티비에서 본 X-파일과는 다릅니다. 국방부는 영공 침해 여부에만 관심이 있을 뿐, 외계인 존재 여부는 관심이 없다고 밝혔습니다.
6. 음모설을 주장하는 열성 외계인 신봉자들에게는 만족할 만한 자료가 아닐지 모르지만, 영국 상공에 출몰한 신비스러운 물체에 대한 사람들의 궁금증을 다소 해소하는 데는 도움이 될 전망입니다.

1. Of course, many people around the world were convinced of the existence of aliens long before that announcement from the Vatican. In Britain there have been hundreds of UFO sightings just over the last decade. And now the British Defense Ministry is revealing what it knows. Phil Black reports.

2. UFOs Hollywood style. When aliens visits Earth in the movies they’re often driving that distinctive flying saucer, from Close Encounters of a Third Kind to Independence Day, and Mars Attack.
3. And this is how UFOs tend to look when earthlings catch them on camera- shaky, fuzzy images, bright lights, and saucer-shaped objects. Fraud, foolishness, or a proof of alien life? The British Ministry of Defense says it’s now coming clean on what it knows, which, it insists, is not very much. It’s begun releasing all its files on UFO sighting investigations. The first batch covers 1981 to 87.

4. UFO buff, David Clarke fought for the document’s release and has read them all so far. He says most of the sightings can be explained, but not all of them like the air-traffic controllers, who were taken by surprise in 1984.
"The ball of light, and they described seeing this thing touch down on the runway and zoom away at some fantastic speed. And they were so worried about possible damage to their reputation if they reported this officially and got out to the media, that they demanded their names were withheld.”
5. The Ministry of Defense says it’s releasing the documents because the public demand has been so great and they showed there’s no great alien cover-up. Despite some obvious similarities these investigations aren’t exactly like television’s X-files. The British Ministry of Defense says it’s only worried about finding out whether or not its airspace has been violated and it claims to have no interest in determining whether of not alien life actually exists.
6. Defense officials know that’s unlikely to satisfy hardcore conspiracy theorists, but they hope the files will please many, who are desperate to know more about mysterious close encounters in the skies over Britain.
