1. With exactly just one month to go before the Olympic opening ceremonies, a new report says that China is reneging on its promise to let journalists report freely while in the country. Human Rights Watch warns that reporters covering the Beijing games face real risks. Now the report comes just as Beijing unveals a glittering new Media Center. Our Emily Cheng takes the tour.

2. Welcome to Beijing's main Olympic Press Center what would be the beating heart of media operations during the games. More than 25,000 journalists from around the world are expected. And this place is fully equipped to accommodate them with help desks and news desks in different languages.
3. There's even a post office, ATMs, a branch of the Bank of China, and an Air China office where journalists can book travel in and out of Beijing. Here in the working center, there are more than 900 stations where journalists can access the Internet and watch the games live. There's also a computer system that taps into the entire database of information about the athletes and events.
4. But in order to enjoy all of these facilities, journalists must pass a rigorous security check, get a visa and get credentialed. A process, some journalists claim, has not been easy. Freelancers from smaller media outlets may not even have the chance to come. When Beijing was chosen to host the games, Chinese officials promised free and open reporting. Whether China will deliver on that promise remains to be seen.

2. 베이징 올림픽 프레스센터입니다! 올림픽 경기가 진행되는 동안 취재 본부 역할을 하게 될 공간입니다. 전 세계 2만 5천 명이 넘는 기자가 이곳에 모이게 됩니다. 취재 지원을 위해 각종 언어로 정보가 제공됩니다.
3. 프레스센터에는 우체국과 현금인출기, 중국은행의 지점과 비행기표를 살 수 있는 에어차이나 예약 센터도 마련돼 있습니다. 신속한 정보 전달을 위해, 취재진이 인터넷을 활용하고 경기를 관람할 수 있는 시설 900석 이상이 준비돼 있습니다. 이곳에선 선수와 경기에 대한 정보가 저장된 데이터베이스에 접속할 수 있습니다.
4. 하지만 프레스센터를 활용하려면, 중국 정부의 엄격한 신원 조회를 거쳐 비자를 받아, 기자증을 발급받아야 합니다. 일각에선 상당히 절차가 까다롭다고 불만을 토로합니다. 소규모 매체의 프리랜서 기자들의 사정은 더 어렵습니다. 기자들에게 중국 전역에서 취재의 자유를 보장하겠다던 중국 정부가 약속을 지킬지는 두고 봐야 할 것으로 보입니다. |
