[Lead-in] 1. The move to the white House is certainly going to be a huge transition also for the two young Obama girls. So what it¡¯s like for a kid at the White House¡¦so few kids have experienced it. Does the secret service yell at them for example if they trek in mud? Some say it¡¯s actually fun, can you believe it? And quite cozy. Deborah Feyerick with more on that.
[Report] 2. For the Obamas, there's lots to do before January when they move into the White House. First, there's the issue of schools for fifth-grade Malia and second-grade Sasha. The girls, who got a ride from their dad Monday morning, currently attend private school in Chicago. When the Clintons first moved to Washington, they opted for private school for 12-year-old daughter Chelsea. Nine-year-old first daughter Amy Carter was sent to public school.
3. And it won't be just the four Obamas moving in. The girls' grandmother, who helped care for them during the campaign, will also come, as will a new best friend.
[Barack Obama / US president-elect] "And you have earned the new puppy that's coming with us to the White House."
4. Not everyone brings a puppy. Caroline Kennedy brought her pony Macaroni. Teddy Roosevelt's kids snuck their pony Algonquin into the White House to cheer up a sick brother. With so much extra security around the family, that's unlikely to happen. The girls can even attend dinners like Amy Carter did with heads of state though it's unlikely they'll bring a book.
5. And while the girls are likely to spend a lot of time inside, there's lots to do, like private pool parties, hide-and-seek, maybe even ride a bike, like another former resident.
[Sally Quinn /The Washington Post] "It really is like 'Eloise at the Plaza.' I mean, these two girls are going to find so many wonderful things to explore, and so many rooms, so much history, and it's very much a home up on the second floor, it's very cozy up there."
6. And of course the family can always get away from it all by escaping to Camp David where the girls can run around as much as they want and be kids, not first, not famous, just kids. Deborah Feyerick, CNN, New York. |
