There lived a lady by the North Sea shore
(Lay the bent to the bonnie broom)
Two daughters were the babes she bore

북해의 어느 바닷가에 여인 하나 살고 있었지.
그녀에겐 여자아이가 둘 있었네.
As one grew bright as is the sun,
So coal black grew the elder one .
작은 딸이 태양처럼 밝게 자랄 때
큰 딸은 숯덩이처럼 어둡게 자랐다네.
A knight came riding to the lady's door,
He'd travelled far to be their wooer.
어느 날 말을 탄 기사 하나 문을 두드렸네.
멀리서 온 그이를 두 딸은 사랑하게 되었네.
He courted one with gloves and rings,
But he loved the other above all things.
그이는 언니에겐 장갑과 반지를 주었지만
동생에겐 무엇보다 소중한 사랑을 바쳤다네.
Oh sister will you go with me
To watch the ships sail on the sea?
"얘야, 나랑 가자꾸나.
가서 바다 위를 달리는 배들을 보자꾸나."
She took her sister by the hand
And led her down to the North Sea strand.
언니는 동생의 손을 잡았다네.
그리고는 바다로 내려가는 길목으로 이끌었네.
And as they stood on the windy shore
The dark girl threw her sister o'er.
둘은 바람부는 벼랑 위에 서 있었네.
그리고 그 무서운 여자는 동생을 밀어버렸네.
Sometimes she sank, sometimes she swam,
Crying, "Sister, reach to me your hand!
삼켰다가 뱉었다가 바다는 희롱하는데
동생은 하염없이 울부짖었네.
"언니, 내 손을 좀 잡아줘!"
"Oh Sister, Sister, let me live,
And all that's mine I'll surely give."
"언니, 언니, 나를 좀 살려줘!
내가 가진 걸 언니에게 다 줄게."
"(It's) your own true love that I'll have and more,
But thou shalt never come ashore."
"내가 갖고 싶은 건 네가 사랑하는 사람이야.
그러니 너는 절대로 뭍으로 올라와선 안 돼."
And there she floated like a swan,
The salt sea bore her body on.
한 마리 백조처럼 그녀는 떠다녔네.
바다는 점점 더 멀리 그녀를 싣고 갔네.
Two minstrels walked along the strand
And saw the maiden float to land.
두 시인은 바닷가를 거닐고 있었지.
그러다가 뭍으로 밀려온 그 불행한 처녀를 보았네.
They made a harp of her breastbone,
Whose sound would melt a heart of stone.
그녀의 가슴뼈로 시인들은 하프를 만들었네.
그 아름다운 소리는 돌같은 마음도 녹일 수 있었다네.
They took three locks of her yellow hair,
And with them strung the harp so rare.
그리고 그녀의 눈부신 금발은
세상에 둘도 없는 하프의 현이 되었네.
They went into her father's hall
To play the harp before them all,
시인들은 우연히 그녀의 집으로 가게 되었네.
신부가 된 언니를 위해 하프를 연주하게 되었지.
But when they laid it on a stone
The harp began to play alone.
그냥 바위 위에 올려놓았을 뿐인데
하프는 혼자서 울리기 시작했네.
The first string sang a doleful sound:
"The bride her younger sister drowned."
첫번 째 현이 슬픈 소리로 울었네.
"진짜 신부는 바다에 잠겨 있죠."
The second string as that they tried,
In terror sits the black-haired bride.
시인들은 두번 째 현을 켰다네.
검은 머리의 신부는 하얗게 질려서 주저앉았네.
The third string sang beneath their bow,
"And surely now her tears will flow."
그리고 세번 째 현이 활을 잡고 울었네.
"이제는 가짜 신부가 눈물을 흘릴 때죠."
