Natalie Anne Merchant (born October 26, 1963) is an American singer-songwriter and musician.
She joined the alternative rock band 10,000 Maniacs in 1981 and left it to begin her solo career in 1993.
어느날 파티에서 노래를 부르게 된 것을 계기로 밴드를 하게 되었고, 나름대로 지적인 면모를 잃지 않으며
밴드 내에서 절제된 보컬의 미학으로 10,000 매니악스(10,000 Maniacs)의구심점으로 활동하던
나탈리 머천트는 서른 살에 밴드을 떠나겠다던 자신의 얘기대로 밴드 생활을 마감하며 솔로로 전향했다.
600만장 이상이 팔린 두 장의 앨범 와 로 10,000 매니악스 시절의 지적인 -
그러나 사회 비판적인 반항의 변모를 지닌 ‘시비꾼’ 같은- 송라이터와 프론트 우먼의 위치에서,
세계적인 ‘여성’ -그녀가 좋아하지 않을 말이긴 하지만- 가수라는 명성을 얻었다.
솔로 활동을 시작하며 나탈리 머천트는 10,000 매니악스 시절의 역동적이던 분위기와는 다른 길을 찾았다.
그녀는 사라 맥라클란, 폴라 콜과 같은 보다 정적인 사운드 쪽으로 기울었는데,
이것은 그녀가 여성 홀로 10,000 매니악스에 있으면서 여성성을 드러내는 ‘것처럼’ 보이는 행동을 지양했으며,
그런 오랜 밴드 생활 속에서 아이러니하게도 자신이 하고 싶은 것을 -그것이 여성성의 발로였든 아니었든지 간에-
놓쳤던 시간들에 대한 만회이자,한편으로는 30이 넘은 여성 로커가 선택할 당연한 길이었던 것도 같다.
어쨌든 짧은 시간 안에 앨라니스 모리셋, 사라 맥라클란 등 격렬하지 않은, 자신의 여성성이 가지는 감수성
으로 메리트로 -물론 상업적 상품화와는 다른- 만들어낸 여가수들과 함께 릴리스 페어의 반열에 올랐다.
