69년 영국의 7인조 팝밴드 The Foundations가 우리에게 선사해준 흥겨운 멜로디 .
올드 팝 타이틀에 종종 이름을 내걸던 이 곡이 다시 세계적으로 조명을 받은 것은 발표된지 30년의 세월이 흐른 98년 화장실 유머의 대명사 패럴리 형제 (짐 캐리의 <덤 앤 더머>가 아직도 생생한데)의 영화 <메리에겐 특별한 것이 있다> 의 엔딩부분에서 흘렀기 때문이다.
출연진들이 뮤지컬처럼 를 부를 때 사람들은 다시 The Foundations을 떠올렸고 이들을 모르던 세대에게는 새롭게 어필하게 된 계기가 되었다.
우리에겐 '둔킨(Dunkin) 도나츠'-던킨이라는 이름을 쓰지 않으면서 의미를 전달하는 동시에 간접광고의 그물도 피해가는 초고수적 센스 ㅎㅎㅎ(-. -;;)- CF 배경음악으로 한번 더 다가오면서 The Foundations은 몰라도 제목도 몰라도 Why. do. you, build~ me up! 은 초등학생도 흥얼거릴 정도로 친숙해졌다. "왜 너는 날 세워~ 뻐러컵!" 이라는 다양한 해석도 목격할 수 있는 노래이기도 하다.
The Foundations는 67년 영국에서 결성되어 70년 해체하기까지 바람처럼 인기를 휘몰아치다가 해체한 밴드이다. 당시 미국에서 불던 Motown 주축의 소울바람이 대서양을 건너 영국에 도착하며 그 인기를 원없이 누릴 때 그 흐름을 타고 탄생했다. 트리니나드 출신으로 전직 권투선수이기도 한 리드 싱어 Clem Curtis를 주축으로 기타 Alan Warner, 플룻 Pat Burke(자메이카산), 테너 색스폰 Mike Elliott, 트럼본 Eric Allan Dale, 키보드 Tony Gomez, 베이스 Peter Macbeth, 드럼 Tim Harris 의 7인 라인업으로 밴드를 구축했다.
이미 재즈 밴드에서 한 가닥하고 있었던 멤버들이 대부분이어서 67년 1월 결성후 그해 여름 첫 싱글 를 내놓았다. 7인의 사무.... 7인의 멤버들의 기대와는 달리 이 곡은 라디오에서도 대중음악계로부터도 아무런 반응을 얻지 못한다.
그러다 BBC 라디오에서 이 곡을 주목, 소개되었고 미운 오리가 될 뻔했던 순간에 화려한 백조로 비상한다. 백조 변신에는 이 곡이 65년부터 영국에 일었던 소울 붐에 맞춰져 있었기 때문이기도한데, 어쨌든 행운은 빨리 찾아왔다.
11월 가 영국차트에서 1위를 차지했다. 이 여세에 힘입어 미국으로의 진출을 시도하는데 하드 소울 사운드라고 평가받은 이들은 빌보드에서 11위에 오르며 미국에서도 성공적인 출발을 시작했다. 이 싱글은 전세계적으로 350만장이나 팔렸는데 The Foundations은 어느새 스타의 위치에 서있는 자신들을 발견하게 된다.
